GHIN Handicap Service
Thank you for your input to our member survey. We listened and now are in the process of installing the Western PGA GHIN Handicap Service. This system ensures the integrity of each Handicap Index® it issues to association members through its Member Clubs. The Handicap Program includes course rating services, education, handicap administration, and computation through the GHIN Service, a service of the United States Golf Association (USGA).
Maintaining Playing Conditions
from Mark Zendarski
Golf Course Superintendent

With the advice from the Penn State Turf Management Program, our Golf Course Architect, and the cooperation from ownership, the RFCC maintenance department has embarked on a comprehensive tree management program which will include removal, pruning, and planting with an emphasis on “the right tree in the right place.” RFCC is committed to a strong tree replacement program, and will plant two new trees for every tree removed.

There is a strong argument that fewer trees may be better not only for golf course turf, but also for the health of the remaining trees left on the property. Fewer trees require less maintenance and often can provide the same strategic golf value with a proportionately less negative impact on the turf. Too many trees will cause problems. Tree overcrowding is a common occurrence on older (30 – 50 years) style golf courses for several reasons. Often trees are planted for instant gratification without thought of their coverage once they have matured.

For the past three seasons, RFCC has followed a 5-year plan to improve the health of the golf course, and the tree management program is a key component of this program.
New practice range to open in May.

River Forest Estates
The Allegheny Township Planning Commission voted 5-0 in favor of the RFE housing development. A public meeting on 11/30 will culminate with a vote of the Allegheny Township Supervisors in December or January. The development plan includes about 440 single and multi-family housing units on the former "upper course" area, along with about 80 units that will surround the golf course. Infrastructure work is expected to begin in 2007, with the first homes available in early 2008.

RFCC Club Championships
“Championship Flight.”
Our 2006 Championship featured the return of a previous champion. Don Marchese defeated Paul Sciullo II 3 up to gain his second championship in the last three years, in the “Championship Flight.” “First Flight” was won by Mark Pinchok winning over Jeff Schlegel to capture his first championship. Congratulations to the winners and all the players in our Club Championship.

Billy Clark, a charter member of RFCC, was awarded a life membership at River Forest after a round of golf with his friends. He is shown here with his son, John, and grandson, Bill. Billy is a former club champion and has 'shot his age' at RFCC several times. Billy remains very active and plays many weekends with the "SWATS" group, including many of RFCC's best players. River Forest is honored to have loyal members with such love for the course.

Maintaining Playing Conditions
Pictured above and below, superintendent Mark Zendarski rebuilds the green-side bunker on #15. The bunker was re-shaped and a drain was added, all using new high-quality sand. The project plan improves additional RFCC bunkers each year. 2006 work included #8, #14, and #15.
Bob Ford at RFCC. You soon will see a familiar face on the course at RFCC, talking with our members to ask their input. One of the golf industry's most respected professionals is Western Pennsylvania's own Bob Ford, who has the distinction of being the Head Golf Professional for two of golf's greatest courses - Oakmont CC in Pittsburgh and Seminole CC in Jupiter, Florida. Bob Ford has signed on to serve as an advisor and consultant for River Forest along with his partners at Malek & Walton International Golf Course Design, LLC. Their first assignment is to present a "master plan" for the continued development and improvement of the course, the clubhouse, and the overall golf program at River Forest. We are delighted to work with Bobby and his team of professionals.
Frost Delays. During the late fall and winter months, the superintendent is faced with one of the most unpopular decisions of the season… whether to keep golfers off the course in the morning until the frost has melted. Treading on frosty turf will cause the ice crystals that form in the leaf cells to burst, which causes brown footprints, or brown cart tire tracks, that are slow to recover. Playing on frozen greens (with no frost present) damages the crowns of the plants, resulting in poor spring growth and poor quality turf as late as mid-summer. Please understand that the frost delays on cold mornings are the maintenance staff’s objective to keep playing conditions at their best for the longest duration.
Dues for this year have again not been increased. RFCC now offers new "Eagle Packages" that allow our members to save money and reduce check-in times by paying in advance for next season.
Thank you to our many long-term members, and to the many new members joining the River Forest Family each year. We appreciate your loyalty and the opportunity to be your favorite golf club.

Bob and Ted Artkowsky, uncle and nephew pictured above, are the winners of the RF Member Member event held on 7/9/06. They won first place at 9 under. Bob shot a near par 73, an incredible feat considering the fact that he recently turned 77!

Golf Tips from Mark Zendarski
Cheers
to the people who consistently give a little extra during their round, such as replacing discarded divots and repairing ball marks on the green that aren’t yours.
Cheers to the golfers who do not blame the quality or quantity of sand in our bunkers for a poorly played shot. The last time I checked, sand was intended to be a hazard, not a day at the beach.
Jeers to everyone, everywhere who insists on yammering away on a cell phone on the golf course. Relax, play golf, and enjoy the scenery. Leave the cell phone in the car!
Double Jeers to all of you (you know who you are) who are determined to drive your golf cart anywhere you please when the rule for the day is clearly stated, “Cart Paths Only Today.” How do you think your lawn would look if everyone who came to your house parked in your front yard instead of the driveway?
Double Cheers to those players who remain on the cart paths even when there are no restrictions. It’s nice to see so many who care about quality playing conditions at your club.
Triple Cheers to the young boy who was playing on #3 a few weeks ago - he quickly and correctly fixed four or five ball marks while his father lined up a putt. There is hope for this great game yet!

40 Years of Great Golf

As River Forest members and staff celebrate the 40th anniversary of this country club, we’re also celebrating the heritage of golf, as well as the heritage of the beautiful landscape that forms RFCC. The land where we now golf, and dine in the Grille Room, and hold family and community functions, was once owned by Andrew Carnegie, a historical connection that links RFCC even more tightly to both the heritage of western Pennsylvania and to golf’s important Scottish origins.
As a way of commemorating this important milestone, River Forest Country Club, along with development partner S & A Homes, will celebrate the past forty years of great golf with more golf, project announcements, receptions, and of course birthday cake!
Please join us the weekend of August 25, 26 & 27, and meet the members and staff of RFCC, who are looking forward to another forty years. More details about the anniversary weekend will be announced soon.
First, we'd like to introduce you to some of the earliest members of RFCC, starting back in the mid 1960s when there were only four holes open!

The Pro Shop, from Tim Conroy

Finally got a hold of Joe DiNardo, and if we continue to send him our $$, he promises to change our weather patterns. Eight days of 90º dry weather and then six days of down pours caused many problems for our course.
A reminder to all golfers: when we have dry weather, we will water two or three times per day. This is necess
ary to maintain our course. Please understand our irrigation system is a computerized cycle and not controllable manually. And the opposite situation, when we have 6” of rain in three days, we cannot cut the greens, fairways, and roughs as necessary. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Option to Improve Your Score: There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging him or herself with a penalty stroke.

2006 Golf Primer from Tim Conroy
We hope you all are equally excited about the start of the 2006 golf season. Spring is almost here and we are getting the course in shape. Hopefully you'll have the chance to experience it for yourself. See you soon!

You can help by practicing course etiquette.
o Repair all ball marks
o Replace all divots
o Rake all sand traps
o Obey all “signs”
o Follow the Rules of the day”

Additionally, for the courtesy of our members, a few reminders are necessary.
o Tee times are strongly recommended for all days and tee times are taken one week in advance, including weekends.
o Cancellations for tee times are required and in a timely manner (24 hours prior).
o Foursomes with carts are required prior to noon on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.
o A maximum of five minutes is allowed at the turn, especially on weekends.

Our members demand that slow play must be eliminated at RFCC, especially during busy times of play. The following rules are highlighted for all members and guests so that everyone enjoys their round of golf.

Pace of Play Rule
o Golfers are expected to complete their 9-hole round within 2 hours & 10 minutes, and their 18-hole round within 4 hours & 20 minutes.
o Course Marshals will monitor and enforce pace of play and all course policies.
o Keep up with the group ahead of you.
o Failure to comply with Pace of Play rules will result in skipping open hole(s) or removal from the course, forfeiting all fees.

Pick up the Pace. Play Ready Golf.
o Minimize your practice swings. Take practice swings in advance of your turn to hit.
o Be ready to hit when it is your turn.
o Proceed to your ball as soon as it is safe to do so.
o Hit out of turn when it is safe to do so. Forget honors. Have a clear shot? Hit it!!
o Don't worry who's behind you; keep pace with the group ahead!

We will continue to offer special events and special “deals” this season. Check the website, www.golfriverforest.com and Pro Shop notices for details. Her are a few to start the season, beginning in May.

Poa Annua-- What is it?
Mark Zendarski - Golf Course Superintendent

For about six weeks this Spring you will notice the greens may look a little lighter and play a little slower. This is caused by the dreaded “POA” grass that you may hear golfers talking about. Since Poa Annua is a type of grass, I should first explain grass. Grasses are living plant monocots (one leaf) that include parallel venation, a single seed leaf in their seed with vascular bundles in its roots. All grasses are members of a single family of plants (gramineae) and within this family are six subfamilies containing 25 tribes, 600 genera and 10,000 species. This diverse group ranges from small fine textured one-inch grasses to 100-foot bamboo with stem diameters of one foot. Only a few dozen form a contiguous plant community tolerant of mowing and traffic and thus are adapted for use on golf courses.

There are three types of Poa Cultivars. Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa Pratensis L.), Roughstalk Bluegrass (Poa Trivialis L.) and the one that populates over 95% of River Forest (and most western PA courses - including Oakmont) - Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua L.)

There are several important characteristics that distinguish Poa Annua from other grasses such as its bunch style growth habit, cold hardiness, ability to tolerate close mowing, and it forms compact dense turf.

Poa Annua is a genetically diverse plant species, and different subspecies of it exist. As you could guess by its scientific name it behaves as an annual plant meaning that it germinates from seed, grows vegetatively and then flowers producing seed for future generations, followed by plant death. It is my job not to let that last part happen. The plant flowers at any height of cut, predominantly in April through May, and the production of whitish seedheads is one of the major objections golfers contend with in this region and why some superintendents categorize Poa Annua as a weed.

So the next time you miss that four-foot putt and are ready to blame those Poa seedheads, remember -- with the exception of a short period in Spring, Poa Annua is the best, smoothest, truest putting surface around.

Well Deserved Rest and Relaxation

It isn't only the employees of River Forest Country Club who get to enjoy the rest and relaxation of being closed during the winter; it is the facility itself. A lot of hard work was accomplished within a thirty-day time span, giving the clubhouse some much needed attention.

The entire clubhouse received a thorough ?spring cleaning? with the walls being cleaned and carpets being scrubbed. The floor in the Grill Room was stripped and resurfaced. It is amazing how something like resurfacing a floor can enhance the character of a room.

The kitchen received the biggest facelift of all. The walls and equipment were completely cleaned, a fresh new coat of paint was applied to the walls and a brand new poured/sealed floor was installed. The new floor should prevent any water from damaging the pro shop and ladies locker room plus reduce any offensive odors.

The maintenance crew took advantage of the mild January temperatures by removing 36 dead or dying trees from the golf course. A serious effort has been made to remove leaves and brush from the course as well. The crew has also been busy repairing and cleaning equipment preparing for Spring. Their help with the kitchen renovations was greatly appreciated.

When the Banquet and Kitchen Staff put down their dust rags and paint brushes, they picked up their pencils and paper and began working on a new 2006 menu. All of the brainstorming resulted in a new lunch and dinner menu offering over 20 new items. Our succulent Prime Rib is still available every Saturday night and we urge you to try our Lasagna every Sunday, Pizza every Wednesday, and Bone Suckin' BBQ Ribs every Friday.

The staff at River Forest worked very hard this winter to maintain and improve the condition of the clubhouse. We hope our members and guests notice the “fruits of our labors” and appreciate the time and effort that went into making their clubhouse a place of relaxation and enjoyment. We cannot wait to see you out on the course or having a bite to eat in the Grill Room.

Assistant Banquet Manager Amanda Yasczak

A familiar face returned to River Forest Country Club this past fall. Amanda Yasczak accepted the position of Assistant Banquet Manager in October 2005. Amanda assists the Banquet Manager with scheduling and planning the 300 + events held annually at River Forest, along with helping oversee the day to day operations in the Grill Room.

Amanda previously worked at River Forest from October 2002 until December 2003 as part of the waitress and banquet staff. Laura Zendarski, Banquet Manager, believes that Amanda is a great asset to the facility. “Mandy and I have known each other for quite some time. We work very well as a management team. It is reassuring to have her as part of the staff, knowing that we have over 300 events and many new members this upcoming season.”

Amanda is from the West Leechburg area. She received her Bachelors in History from Washington & Jefferson College and more recently achieved her Masters in Public History from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Amanda is currently working on a project involving the history of River Forest. The primary focus is the area known as Lucesco which is located along the old railroad north of the golf course. She is also researching the recent history, including the opening of River Forest and important events dealing with the golf course. Amanda will also look at the early history of the property, specifically the events and times surrounding the Harbison Massacre.

“We are very fortunate to have Mandy back at River Forest. She exudes a high standard of customer service,” states Laura. Mandy remarked that she enjoys being a part of River Forest, and is looking forward to an exciting 2006 season.

RFCC Honors Employees: "68 Years and Counting!"

River Forest Country Club honors two veteran employees for their long and dedicated years of service to the members and guests of River Forest… 68 years combined! Joyce Lang has skillfully served the members and guests of River Forest as a server for 37 years, while “Jimmy” Kromada has pleasantly provided his services as a starter on the golf course for 31 years.
“Miss Joyce” resides in Freeport Borough and has 6 children and 12 grandchildren. When not helping others, she enjoys reading in her spare time. River Forest Banquet Manager Laura Zendarski reports “Joyce is a true inspiration to all of the staff at River Forest. We constantly are told by our members that Joyce is such a gem. We just love her!”
Jimmy resides in Buffalo Township with his wife, Doris. He enjoys golfing several times a week and spending winters in Florida. He is retired from Allegheny Ludlum Steel and now is “Mr. Jimmy” who, to most, personifies River Forest golf.
“Jimmy is here every weekend, rain, or shine to meet our golfers with a welcoming smile and usually at least two good jokes!” commented Pro Shop Manager Tim Conroy.
“He does a great job with our members and is especially helpful to guests experiencing golf at RFCC for the first time.”
The pair have worked at River Forest since its beginning days with the original owners, the Tredway family. River Forest was acquired by River Forest Partners, LLC at the end of 1999.
“We are extremely proud of Joyce Lang and Jimmy Kromada as true ambassadors of River Forest. Their hard work ethic and willingness to go the extra steps to do ‘whatever it takes’ in service to our members and guests in exemplary. Let’s hope they stay with us for many years to come,” commented River Forest President Herm Tomer.

2005 Ladies Invitational

The River Forest house leagues are looking to recruit new members for 2006.
The RFCC leagues are played on Monday through Thursday evenings and are a great opportunity to play competitively and also to meet other RFCC members. Various leagues consist of as few as sixteen members to thirty-two members, and play weekly nine hole matches starting as early as 4:00 P.M. or at 5:00 P.M. depending on the league. The leagues alternate front and back nines each week. At the end of the season, there is a special outing with prizes and dinner, which is customized to the various leagues. We are currently seeking new members to join in on the action for 2006. River Forest can administer the golf league handicap and matches, and will post schedules and results on the RFCC League website.

Anyone who is interested may contact Tim Conroy in the Pro Shop (724 -295-2217) for availability to play on selected evenings

The RFCC 2005 Club Championships were completed September 25 with Paul Sciullo II defeating John Clark, 1-up after 20 holes, for the championship flight.

The first flight was won by Jim Lawson, winning 1-up over Ted Artkowsky, while the second flight winner was Steve Rove defeating Steve Klein. It was a great tournament with matches requiring “sudden death” holes, to determine winners.

Congratulations to all three winners and the entire field who played in our Club Championship.

The format for the 2006 Club Champions will be changed, and new flights will be added for Women, Juniors, and Seniors.

2005 Junior Golf Program

A Golf Tip from Mark Zendarski – Golf Course Superintendent

The 330 yard Par 4 #18 at River Forest has all the criteria to produce a challenging and memorable finishing hole. There are 17 large trees guarding the left side of the driving area and another 41 guarding the right side of the hole. # 18 has a water hazard, three greenside bunkers, a sloped putting surface, and out of bounds on the left side of the hole behind and to the right of the green. And after all that, the key component causing this hole to be demanding is the dreaded downhill/side hill lie! Instead of giving a lesson on how to play downhill/side hill lies one should learn how to avoid them.

Try hitting a mid-iron off the tee (lay-up) to the 150-yardage marker, or for you long ball hitters, grip it and rip it into the dip (about 210 yards). These are the two areas where level playing ground exist.

The green can be very treacherous putting from the left side or behind the pin so aim the second shot below and to the right leaving you with a not so difficult uphill birdie putt or at least guaranteed par. And then it’s off to enjoy the 19th hole!
